چکیده

Based on atmospheric data and models, the tropical CO2 source anomaly reaches up to 2 GtC yr , but the respective contributions of the terrestrial biosphere and the oceans to this ux are di cult to quantify. Here we present a new method for estimating CO2 uxes from oceanic observations based on the surprisingly good predictive skill of temperature and salinity for surface dissolved inorganic carbon. Using historical temperature and salinity data, we reconstruct the basin scale CO2 ux to the atmosphere in the equatorial Paci c from 1982 to 1993. We nd that interannual anomalies do not exceed 0.4 0.2 GtC yr 1 which suggests that up to 80% of the tropical CO2 source anomaly is due to the terrestrial biosphere.

Sensitivity of the tropical Pacific Ocean to precipitation-induced freshwater flux

We have performed experiments using an ocean model to study the sensitivity of tropical Paci"c Ocean to variations in precipitation induced freshwater #uxes. Variations in these #uxes arise from natural causes on all time scales. In addition, estimates of these #uxes are uncertain because of di!erences among measurement techniques. The model used is a quasiisopycnal model, covering the Paci"c f...

Variability of global net sea–air CO2 fluxes over the last three decades using empirical relationships

The interannual variability of net sea–air CO2 flux for the period 1982–2007 is obtained from a diagnostic model using empirical subannual relationships between climatological CO2 partial pressure in surface seawater (pCO2SW) and sea surface temperature (SST), along with interannual changes in SST and wind speed. These optimum subannual relationships show significantly better correlation betwee...

Intercomparison of coral oxygen isotope data and historical SST: Potential for coral-based SST eld reconstructions

We examine the extent to which the large-scale features of the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly eld are resolved by a sparse observational network of coral oxygen isotope ( 18O) time series. Regression of annually-averaged 18O data against gridded estimates of local SST anomaly within the period 1856{1990 con rm the literature regression of 18Oanomaly on SST anomaly for Indo-Paci c corals....

Forcing Mechanisms of Sea Level Interannual Variability in the Bay of Bengal

A nonlinear, 41⁄2-layer reduced-gravity ocean model with active thermodynamics and mixed layer physics is used to investigate the causes of sea level interannual variability in the Bay of Bengal, which may contribute to flooding and cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh. Forcing by NCEP–NCAR reanalysis fields from 1958 to 1998 yields realistic solutions in the Indian Ocean basin north of 298S. Contro...

El Nifio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and decadal-scale climate variability at 10øN in the eastern Pacific from 1893 to 1994: A coral-based reconstruction from Clipperton Atoll

We have developed a 101 year (1893-1994) subseasonal oxygen (•80) and carbon (•3C) isotopic time series from Clipperton Atoll in the eastern Pacific using the coral Porites lobata. In agreement with Linsley et al. [1999] we find that seasonal nd interannual coral •80 variability at Clipperton results from variability in both water temperature and salinity. Three new coral time series demonstrat...
